Top Five Tips for a Happy and Healthy Dog

Over the course of this year, we’ve witnessed many shifts in consumer behaviour and lifestyles. One of our favourite positive trends to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic is the recent boom in pet adoption.

Long days working from home and expended periods of social isolation have resulted in a dramatic increase in ‘Covid-puppies’ or ‘pandemic pets’ – by up to 300% in some states! (Seven News)

With this is mind, and in recognition of International Dog Day today, we ran an office poll to gather our dog-loving team’s top five tips for a happy and healthy hound.

1. Balanced Diet
You know the saying – ‘you are what you eat’. Well, the same applies to our four-legged family members. Invest in good quality, grain-free dry food (such as SavourLife or BlackHawk) and mix this with good quality protein such as mince or (cooked) chicken. Topping your dog’s meal with half a can of sardines in spring water, a cracked egg, or some plain steamed veggies, will not only make your dog feel like royalty, it will provide an amazing array of nutrients for health and longevity. Hello shiny coat!

2. Bones
It’s not just a cliché! In addition to providing a healthy, balanced diet, a raw bone once a week is great for your dog. Along with keeping them busy, it helps to keep their dental hygiene in check. Ask your local butcher for mutton flaps, brisket bones or lamb necks. Chicken bones aren’t recommended as they are brittle and can be sharp and dangerous. Always supervise your dog while it is eating bones – not only can it be a choking hazard but pups have been known to bury them in strange places, which may not be the best outcome for your lawn or garden beds!

3. Exercise
This is an absolute must and a win-win situation for dog and owner! Even if you have a large backyard, dogs thrive on the mental and physical stimulation that a walk provides – the variety of smells and sounds encountered while on a walk has been likened to a human reading the newspaper. The benefits of walking for people are also hard to ignore – think improved mental health, weight loss, fitness, and vitality. Head out for at least 30 minutes, 4-5 times a week to keep you and your dog feeling healthy and happy.

4. Regular vaccinations
Vaccinations protect your dog from a variety of nasty illnesses and diseases – some of which can be fatal. For a puppy, three booster shots between 6 and 12 weeks of age provide protection from contagious (and serious) diseases, such as parvovirus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza. Other regular vaccinations for your dog include flea, tick, and heartworm boosters. Get in touch with your vet if you are unsure when your dog’s next vaccinations are due.

5. Love and affection
Lastly, time inside the house to give each other love and affection is always recommended. Dogs are social animals, bred over time to form strong connections with their human owners. Putting aside time each day for quality, one-on-one time with your pet will go a long way to having a happy and healthy dog. Let them inside for a pat, a cuddle, some training, and a chat (yes, you can talk to your dog!) – you might find it makes you feel happier, too.

Remember: dogs love routine, so try and incorporate all the above tips into a good daily regime to ensure you, and your dog, are as happy and healthy as can be!
